Dr.Amir Khan - Did u do more harm than good?

I am not a regular blogger, in fact i am writing on this blog after almost 2 years... all thanks to Amir uncle. Firstly i am really happy that Mr.Amir khan has brought up something like 'Does health care need a healing?' on his show. But just like my fellow doctors i am not totally happy with the way he planned the episode... i'll tell my reasons later.I would like to request all my co-doctors not to degrade our dignity and maintain a respectable status by not abusing amir khan and going into his personal life.. after all he is doing what others have not attempted to do. In his previous episodes the topics he brought up will certainly create awareness among all sections of people. So i think he deserves appreciation and respect for that.Regarding apology from him... I honestly say 'NO' after watching the whole episode again... the truth is bitter, but the entire episode in general talks about various problems that indeed exist in our profession and let's accept that fact and not demand an apology.Let us keep in mind that amir khan was educating the viewers and also creating awareness among the viewers.
Coming to what is objectionable on the show:
1.Amir Khan's research team knew what to do but they failed to gather how much precise info they needed to gather.
2.When u talk about loop holes about a 'profession which is based on probability' all the information should be valid and no conflict should arise. The girl who says 'i saved 36Lakhs by taking 3rd opinion...' it's not as simple as one can mouth their brain on TV, for entertainment it was touching but it's not as simple as a woman saying i was demanded dowry but i escaped from their house and survived.
3.Mr.Rai's case totally misleads the public... right from the fact about consent not taken to the amount of blood transfused to his wife.No..... people don't survive for 15-20 years on dialysis, those who survive should be as lucky as Amir khan himself getting into acting profession. No doctor will ever want to kill his patient from the bottom of his heart.. leave the fear of legal trouble he has to face later aside.Since the case is in court let's not take sides on it but it was definitely not the perfect example to be aired on the show. For complete info on this particular story go through this: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=3987374639955 It is something amir failed to bring up on his show where one sided sentiment was shown. In 5th episode he brought the Khaps from haryana to question them even though they had very little to defend(u could see their faces throughout the show) & i 100% feel he should've done the same with Dr.Sreedhara.He could've at-least troubled him the same way he troubled Dr.Talwar on the show.
4.Later a doctor from Delhi says he has hardly performed hysterectomy operations in 5-6 months and it is only done during uterine cancer... which misleads the viewers again.I am in my final year.. but i myself would have seen around 10-15 operations in a 30 day clinical rotation that i have.So it's not a rare operation at all.The fact that it was performed on such a large scale in a village is indisputable crime and the doctors should be punished.
5.He has given wrong information regarding the number of govt. & private medical colleges in India just to prove his point.
6.Since the issue of capitation fee paid by medical students was brought up he should have also discussed the doctor-patient ratio in the country.. "India as a whole has a density of one medical college per 38.41 lakh population. & India expects to achieve the World Health Organization’s recommended norm of one doctor per 1000 population by 2028." Let's hope all the young lads who were inspired by amir not ignore the choice of taking up medical profession.
7.The usage of derogatory terms 'maut ke saudagar' by Mr.rai & 'Hamare desh ke itne saare doctors itne bhimaar kyun hai?' definitely hurt the feelings of medical community and it is out of this animosity that some doctors spoke about how hard it is being in this profession and how much time we sacrifice away from our social life and questioned him about his ethics and his personal life, his income etc. It hurts us in the same way a girl feels bad when u call her a slut and then after two minutes say her... 'actually you are a nice girl but...!!' But i request all the doctors not to ask him for an apology and forgive him... we will be the bigger person and maintain our dignity.
The best thing he has done in his episode was talk about generic medicines and also talk about ethics of a doctor. All i want from amir khan is since he is the one who takes the credit and appraisal for putting up a great show.. it becomes his responsibility to take the blame & come out of his closet and educate his patients that he has mislead-ed them in his show.An average educated person who read this article might know that it was wrong in bits and pieces in the show... but what about those illiterate and uneducated people who also watched the show throughout India? Won't they still be in the wrong belief that what ever their most respected hero showed was true... "If u trust an actor who's exploiting people's emotions over your doctor -who'll always get up in the night to save your life, it's ur problem." That's what i can say now.

Regarding generic medicines and the cuts doctors take from pharma companies... "The department of pharmaceuticals of the government is responsible for promoting generic drugs but they haven’t done a very good job. To promote cheap drugs in 2008, the government had set up a scheme called Jan Ausadhi whose purpose was to set up generic drugstores around the country.Their initial plan was to set up 3000 stores but four years later only 300 of them exist." Since u have read this info i'll give you an example: 'In Andhra Pradesh there are 3 Generic medicine stores that supply these drugs... two in Hyderabad & one in Vishakapatnam. What about the people living in other parts of the state? It is the govt.'s responsibility to make these available at all places.
Yes there are doctors who take incentives from drug companies, but still they prescribe the best quality of  medicine available to the patient, in fact lot of doctors inquire the financial status of the patient and prescribe the ones which he can afford, but this scenario is different in corporate hospitals. To make things more clearer the medical representatives(MR) 'harass' the doctors by running behind them in the same way an aspiring director runs behind an actor to give him their first chance.I might sound harsh or stupid but isn't amir khan charging let's say 8 crore per movie?Does a person need so much money to survive? but still you don't question him since u enjoy the quality of movies he provide are good. This is definitely not cited to justify that doctors can take incentive from drug companies & prescribe drugs of high price... Many doctors i have seen since 5 years just throw the low quality drugs from MRs in the dustbin and write the drugs that best suit the patient.
Make the generic drug stores available at all places and u can see a lot of doctors will start prescribing them.CONTROL THE DRUG MAFIA...!To know more about facts related to generic medicines read this: http://health.india.com/diseases-conditions/generic-drugs-facts-you-need-to-know/
I would like to conclude by saying that "the harm from amir's episode acc. to doctor's community's eye amounts to the same amount of good that the people outside the profession perceive."Numerous people from my profession agree to the common point that he has taken the courage to speak about unethical practices 'BUT' failed to put up a well-planned episode.Only a guy from the profession knows how misleading it was and none of us deny the fact that there are bad doctors(who don't deserve that Dr. tag at all) in many parts of the country.Extremists(just like there are hyper people in each problem) bash good doctors for this problem but it ultimately is upto the individual ethics of a doctor.. as far as i am concerned i will never resort to any malpractice for the fear of bringing disrepute not only to myself but my family and my country will always be there in my heart.

PULSE POLIO IMMUNSIATION - Me at YARAB NAGAR(Bangalore Slum)

hi friends.... today was a different day from the routine... i had to attend the 'pulse polio immunisation programme'..... as i started my walk towards the polio booth.. it was a completely new world out there which is very much different from the place where i stay [2kms away]... that was a 'typical indian slum'...!!

The first thing i noticed was the houses where around 10-15 houses were there in a small area which would of the size of half of my lecture hall, they were like the bacterial colonies in culture media.

The kids out there were untidy, unhygenic, yet happy, joyful with their lives. The facilities out there were horrible without proper drinking water, sanitation, phc's etc.!! I realised that India will be really developed only when these places are taken care!! I wish i could solve their problems in future!!

"on the whole it was a boring day in a new environment[resembling 'slum dog millionaire'] but reminded me of my days when i was about 5-6yrs!!"
